Understanding and Overcoming Depression
EMOTIONAL TRAUMA & DEPRESSION
Depression is caused by an emotional trauma usually occurring on or about the time of birth and in almost all cases no later than early childhood. The trauma is caused by a grave fear that the child perceives, typically that she or he is unwanted or another significant concern that causes great fear and apprehension in the child. The response to this pronounced fear is that the infant may question his or her survival and consequently decides to not continue to face life on these terms. In many cases the baby initiates a "death wish" which, when not conveyed to fruition, is carried in their subconscious mind throughout her or his lifetime and remains the basis of a life long struggle with the insidious affliction called depression.
Many of these children do not in fact survive their "death wish" and it is thought that this is the basis for what is called crib death or SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) which is in most cases an unexplained phenomenon.
One important reason why knowing that the events that ultimately cause Depression are initiated by an Emotional Trauma is to understand why an important part of curing depression is to heal and remove the trauma that spawned it. In addition, presumptions that some how Depression comes about sometime towards the later years or during times of great emotional stress can be understood not to be valid. What does occur are depressive episodes that most likely were experienced in better times or earlier periods of the persons life but were borne more easily due to the vigor and vitality of youth. A key point here is that the depressive episodes whether debilitating or not are in fact symptoms of the disorder and do not create the affliction itself.
In general, an Emotional Trauma is triggered when an event occurs that activates a defensive mechanism that in truth exists for our protection. Even though experiencing these feelings and emotions can be painful as an adult they were actually created most often in childhood when we were more vulnerable. If you were bitten by a dog, embarrassed in class or have an irrational fear of swimming in water that is over your head these may have been helpful as a child but could be a burden as an adult. Just like training wheels on a bicycle can be useful when we are learning to ride, they definitely get in the way when we are comfortable and want to take off down the street. Just like PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) may have functioned to help a soldier to survive in wartime, it can be hellish for a veteran trying to function in a normal manner at home.
Therefore, since Depression is generated initially by an emotional trauma, events that remind the sufferer of how he or she felt when the bad feelings were created, even if the original event is not remembered, can set off a depressive episode. Unfortunately, after awhile a network of destructive connections are created to trigger the episodes to the point of becoming habitual where even the perception of a triggering thought or event is absent. But happily, the solutions described in these pages can enable the sufferer to heal and dissolve the triggers, connections, habits and dark feelings that embody the depressive experience.
